Space Settlement Design Competitions are industry simulation games. Participating students are divided into four companies, each of which is led by a working professional in the space industry who serves as “CEO.” The companies develop designs for large space settlements in the future as though they were competing for a space settlement contract. In 2021, scenarios involve the planet Mars in the 2060s. Over the course of the competition, each company works furiously to prepare detailed proposals, which they present to a panel of judges including current and former NASA, Boeing, and SpaceX industry professionals. The judges then select the winning proposal.
The winning company is invited to continue on to the International Space Settlement Design Competition, the finals round, where students meet at the Kennedy Space Center and compete with other companies from India, Pakistan, Uruguay, Canada, Germany, Italy, Romania, China, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The finals competition is held in late July 2021.
Space Settlement Design Competitions have been inspiring students since 1984.
